The Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver will be providing the music for the Wine Pairing Dinner and the Grand Tasting. String quartets, acoustic guitars, and jazz bands will set the atmosphere at these events.

Colin Thurmond – Classical Guitar for November 4th Cocktail Reception for Scholarship Dinner

Colin Thurmond is currently pursuing his Masters of Music with Maestro Ricardo Iznaola Iznaola after graduating Magna Cum Laude and being awarded the 2007 Senior Recital of Distinction and the Elective Recital of Distinction in the same year. He was also prizewinner in the University Concerto Competition in 2007 and twice a prizewinner in the University Chamber Music Competition. He has studied composition with Stephen Goss from the University of Surrey and with William Hill and Chris Malloy from the University of Denver. In addition, Colin maintains a passionate interest in chamber music, performing with Eisteddfod, voice and guitar duo. Thurmond interests include a strong commitment to contemporary music, aiming for the expansion of repertoire through composition and commissioning of new works.

The Vino Quartet

The Vino Quartet has been together since September 17, 2009. This quartet consists of a viola, two violins, and a cello from the University of Denver, Lamont School of Music. The youngest of the group, Andre Hafner, Violin II, is a freshman from South Dakota interested in pursuing a double major. Emily Hall, Viola, is a sophomore from the Denver region. Janis Sakai, Violin I, is a junior from Chicago, Illinois. Andrew Brown, Cello, is a transfer student from the University of Iowa and is a first year student at Lamont. The group is under the instruction of Katherine Knight.

The Clark Smith Trio

The Clark Smith Trio – Jazz Trio for DU Vin Wine Festival, Sunday, November 8th
The Clark Smith Trio is a modern jazz tenor trio, which features Max Abrahams on acoustic bass, Justin Ehmer on drums and Clark Smith on tenor saxophone. The trio is rooted in the music of the jazz greats, but also draws inspiration from modern jazz and world music. Besides the Clark Smith Trio, Max, Justin, and Clark play in the seven man progressive rock/fusion group Bokonon, which just released an EP for free download at their website http://www.bokononmusic.com. Clark and Justin also make up the electro hiphop duo DYNOHUNTER, which features Justin Ehmer, AKA “Plutonik and Clark “The DYNOHUNTER” Smith. Their music can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/dynohunter.The Clark Smith Trio promises to present an evening of sophisticated and engaging music.

The DU Vin Festival consists of the Wine Pairing Dinner on November 4th, 6-9pm, and the Grand Tasting on November 8th from 2-6 pm. This festival, a product of the Wine Festival Class at the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management School (HRTM), is raising funds for HRTM Scholarships. The dinner and tasting will be a delightful experience for you, and a great contribution to the school’s future. Guests must be 21 years of age or older. Parking will be available for $5, cash only, at the parking structure on Evans Avenue and High Street.

SAMPLE FINE WINES, NURTURE YOUNG MINDS

The inaugural DU Vin Wine Festival is the product of a class of 12 senior Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management students at the University of Denver. These talented women are in the process of planning, executing and coordinating all aspects of the event with the guidance of professionals in the food, wine and hospitality industry. They are using their event management skills honed from previous classroom and work experience to execute such a fine operation. From analyzing the target market to developing sales techniques, to deciding the food and wine pairings to recruiting and staffing other talented HRTM students, the management team is planning every aspect from beginning to end. The students have also incorporated sustainable living into this event by using recyclable and biodegradable products, locally grown food products, eco-friendly cleaning materials, and by partnering with a hybrid car taxi company to ensure guests to have a safe ride home.

This process is an excellent hands-on learning opportunity that will enable these talented students to showcase the valuable skills they have learned over the past four years. By generating funds for the HRTM scholarships, this festival will provide future HRTM students with more exciting growth opportunities in their fields of endeavor.
